The Pulwama terrorist attack in Kashmir has the whole country seething with retaliatory anger. This act of extreme violence should cause one to pause and think dispassionately.
This is the time when we all must introspect and ask, what makes humans so violent? The reactions and responses of the people are also extreme, bordering on mental and vituperative violence.
But the question is, why are we still so violent, despite the progress of evolution? We’re violent because most of us are ideologically driven. The dastardly act of the suicide bomber who killedmore than 40 jawans was ‘inspired’ by territorial and misplaced religious ideology of ‘jannat’ and ‘jihad’.
All ideologies demand unconditional allegiance and this unwavering kowtowing is achieved through violent means, whether in action or thought.
Nation, territory, religion and all other -isms are indoctrinated means of furthering and fostering violence. We defend them violently and create disharmony.
The human brain (not mind) keeps justifying all sorts of irrational behaviour. We resort to violence as a reference point or acitadel to defend our beliefs and ideological imperatives.
French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre called it ‘Ismic Insistence’, and the orientalist, Edward W Said, defined it as ‘A sanguinary reaction of an insane mind.’
It’s time we analysed and deconstructed the very roots of our numerous ideologies and dispensed with them, one by one. Doing away with all ideologies will pave the way for a peaceful tomorrow. Human evolution and violence can’t go hand-in-hand.
