Healing Effects of Meditation & Music.
Human beings are the only species in God's creation who make an issue out of nothing. Animals take life as it comes, but when man fails to do a certain thing or to possess certain things. he gets angry and slips into mental depression. An individual's decline begins with desire and ends in misery. To keep the mind happy, we have to learn to be content with minimum wants. Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita said: "From attachment desire, from desire anger, from anger infatuation, from infatuation, a confused mind which results in loss of rea son and leads one to ruin" Dissatisfaction and dec line begin to take root in childhood. Children are attracted to fancy toys and junk food. They become obese and dull. The crip- pling burden of excessive homework leaves them with little time to play or even enjoy the bounties of nature. Fierce competition in school, with obsessive focus on the curriculum. impairs their mental and physical health. Some years back, moral science was taught in schools. It pro vided children the founda- tion for good moral conduct. Today, the subject has almost disappeared in the name of secularism. When a child grows up, his only ambition in life to earn a fat income and live like the others next door, without a thought to spare for the less fortunate. Even as an upwardly mobile adult, he works under great pressure and eats harmful food at odd times. Trying to live up to the 'socially successful' image, he gets stressed and becomes a physical wreck by the time he is 40. Is he happy? No. He starts reflecting rather late in life on his failures. He regrets not having spent enough time with his family and finds that his own children are not emotionally attached to him. It is never too late to introspect and experience rejuvenation. True, one has to be comfortable and try t save for a rainy day. Bu a portion of the incom should be set aside for char ty. If you cannot donate mor ey, you can engage in volun tary service; tutor a need student or help an elderly c infirm neighbour. The sati faction you get from acts pe formed without expectin anything in return canno be described in words. In o der to control the mind fron wandering one can take u simple spiritual practice like meditation and readin the works of great saints. Gradually, by rearrangin your priorities, you exper ence peace and calm. Bring ing the mind under centred is not a one-day exercise. takes time to get into the habit. Meditation also help the mind to concentrate and enables you to achieve grea results. Swami Vivekananda would borrow big books from library and then return them th same day. Th perplexed libra rian asked the Swamiji whet he he was readin the books at all Swamiji replie that he had read all the book he had borrowed and could repeat the con tents of any page verbatim This achievement was entirely the result of extra ordinary concentration. Like meditation, music too, has a tranquillising effect. Those of us whd perform arduous physical or mental work will benefit by listening to good classica music or bhajans early in the morning before starting our workday Good music is a tonic; it has a healing effect. People suffering from digestive disorders, diseases of the nervous system and backache can obtain great relief by listening to sooth ing music. Likewise, by sub mitting yourself to nature's grandeur-watching a sun rise or sunset in the moun tains or by a beach, or sitting near a waterfall- you feel both ennobled and humbled. The Divine makes its presence felt in our lives, saving us from possible decline.
