Meeting of Minds In a Satsang

Meeting of Minds In a Satsang

Satsang is a Sanskrit word meaning coming together or sanga of those who are seeking the truth, God, Being or Sat and the Self. Osho says satsang simply means being in truth. Others say satsang is the company of a good person where Sat stands for godliness, and sang, for company. Company of the sants or saints ennobles, educates and 'purifies' us. Purify here means removing from or mind greed, lust, pride, jealousy, vanity and delusion. We generally see these defects in other people. But in satsang, you might be able to begin seeing them in yourself. In a satsang you discuss a whole lot of conversations, reports, problems, solutions, questions and answers. But all of these would have no meaning if they lack honesty. A satsang without truth is a waste. It would lead you nowhere, individually or as a group. Truth, perhaps, is the hallmark of a satsang and its meaning. Only when you are honest in your discussions, you can hope to arrive at plausible solutions to problems. That is why those getting to- gether for illegal, nefarious and undesirable activi ties are beset with sanga- yourself. Had you been totaldosh, which means being in the wrong company. However cohesive and well-planned the meetings of such people, this need, to overcome a since they are opposed to law or dharma, lack positive tions, such a coming together would never result in peace and growth. In satsang one has to speak, without fear and remorse, without guilt or prejudice. We must absolutely honour this requirement willingly, to be naked and innocent, shorn of all diffidence and prejudice, and tell the truth, without any spiritual or political overtones. In spiritual satsangs you often come across the same people with the same stories, problems, mistakes, and misunderstandings. So why would anyone ever want to go back to satsang after having been there once? been there once? The idea that satsang is unnecessary, that it is a selfindulgent church-going habit stems from the concept that there is possible a final completion of all the problems. That never happens; it can never happen, because life is a continuous process, like a flowing river. The following verse in the Bhaja Govindam explains this concept: "Satsangatva nissn gatvam/ Nissan gatve nirmohatvam/ Nirmohatve nishchalatattvam/ Nischalatattve jivanmuktih". From satsang comes non-attachment, from non-attachment comes freedom from delusion. which leads to selfsettledness. From this state comes jeevan mukti or true freedom. Satsang is the breath of self-realisation. Whether it happens in meetings of a corporate board, in a discussion organised by an office strategy group or a marketing division. To hear of foolishness that we had thought to be our own specially uttered by someone we had never seen before, would rejuvenate you and free you from self-doubt. It's quite okay for you to come to satsang with yourself with other aspects of yourself. Had you been total y happy with yourself and required nothing, you would not have come to satsang. It is this need, to overcome a feeling of inadequacy despite being either wealthy or powerful or having a good career prospect-that makes one come to a satsang. Tulsidas wrote in the Ramcharitmanas that without satsang, vivek does not come as vivek is the power to discriminate, within the framework of the right mode of conduct given a certain situation. "Bin satsang, vivek na hoye/ Ram kripa bin sulabh na soye". Tulsidas also says that without the grace of God it is difficult to obtain both satsang and its offspring. vivek. If one does not participate in satsang, it is very difficult to obtain vivek. And without vivek, it is tough to deal satisfactorily with all the ups and downs in life.
