All Are Equal Before God

A Prime minister of France  once called upon a renowned surgeon to have him perform a very serious  operation  upon  him. "You must not expect to treat me in the same rough manner that  you treat the poor miserable wretches at your hospital," said  the prime minister.

"Sir," replied the surgeon with great dignity "every one of those miserable wretches, as you are pleased

to call them, is a prime minister in my eyes."

Most of us would promptly agree with the surgeon, in theory at least that the wealthy and famous do not have more intrinsic dignity and worth than those who are poor and lowly But in practice, we often behave like the prime minister, for whom the worth of  people depended on their economic and social status.

Conditioned as our minds are with worldly values, we can often find our-Ives evaluating people on the basis of the power they wield so as to decide whether they deserve our respect, though subconsciously. Besides, in our day-to-day lives, we treat our ser-H vants, or rickshaw-pullers, or j labourers, or beggars, disrespect-M fully But, our words with those 9 who are rich are always gentle. ^     Further, we do not like to publicly associate with the lowly. But, we want to flaunt our wealthy acquaintances.

It is surprising that we don't even realise Uiis discrimination is inconsistent with our faith in God. as the

maker of all, we would also believe that all human beings, rich and poor alike., derive their dignity and worth from the fact that they are created in God's image, and not from the external advan tage of worldly fortune.

Similarly, we will also believe the soul of a rich, famous, or highly educated person is not more precious in the sight of God than that of a poor person.

Let us, therefore, strive to see all human beings tnroug God’s eyes and treat everyone with respect.
