A Toolkit for ourselves

Vishal Arora

While every person practices some discipline in life, the life of a spiritual person is supposed to demonstrate a high level of self-control, which often involves denial of one's own self but with no grudge or regret.

It is quite natural for human beings to seek self-interest, pride and fulfillment of every urge. These qualities are inherent in us. in fact, it is popularly perceived that happiness in life is the fulfillment of these desires. But, spirituality produces a desire in humans to increasingly acquire qualities such as humility and a working concern for the world and those in it. This is where we see that discipline becomes botli indispensable and desirable.

However, spirituality is not in . the act of resistance per se. For, spirituality, which is belief in the reality of a world beyond the

physical realm and in the Creator, has more to do with the attitude of loving what is good and hating what is evil which leads to a willing heart for discipline. For instance, there would be little spirituality in practicing restraint with the feeling, "Oh how I wish I could do this, but..." A spiritual person, on the contrary, would say, "I know this can give me pleasure, but surely this is not what I actually desire in my life, and may I never do this."

So it is not just the fear of unpleasant consequences, but a deep-seated desire to do the right thing that should drive a person to practice self-discipline. After all, there are times when righteousness can lead to a loss and wickedness to a gain in the worldly sense - in which case only the craving to do the right thing would count.

On the outside and in the short run, there may not be many visible differences between the disciplines practiced by the spiritual person and the worldly, as both practice restraint and have their times of successes and failures. But, driven by a strong desire for righteousness, a spiritual man is more likely to stand every time he or she falls.
