Tolerance for others can help us evolve as Human Beings

Veena Shenoy

Intolerance stirs hatred and leads to unnecessary clashes among people. When people become intolerant, ultimately, there is decay of social values and destruction of peace. I want to share a small incident that shows how people cannot make small adjustments even for a short period of time.

I go to a park for a stroll in the evening along with my 80-year-old mother. I hold her hand and we walk leisurely in the park. The park also has a round pond. Youngsters jog around the pond whereas elderly people walk around the park. The park is my mother’s favourite place. The walking area is not very narrow and at a time, nearly four to five people can walk side by side.

One day, while we were walking in the park , a man told us that since we were holding hands, we should move to one side, as we were blocking the way for those walking behind us. His voice was quite rude and his words were sarcastic. I was left shocked by his behaviour. We are regular walkers in the park and we had never encountered such an incident. Without arguing, we moved

When we go to a park, we interact with our fellow walkers hardly for a few seconds. It’s sad that we cannot make minor adjustments even for a few seconds. Values such as tolerance should be inculcated in children during their formative years, so that they become sensitive citizens and respect the feelings of other people, specially the elderly.
