Swami Avadeshanand Giri
The Supreme pervades the universe and lives in the heart of every living being. The entire world is being ruled by the unmanifest Being and just as you can spin any object by placing it on a wheel, so too is the world in continual motion.
In this entire universe there are innumerable planets and stars. And the Creator is infusing everything with momentum and order of their own without Himself getting involved. A small seed becomes a tree and the tree in turn gives birth to thousands of seeds … this order keeps repeating itself. Every drop of water seeks to become the ocean and as a result of this desire it does reach the ocean and the cycle continues.
Through thoughts that arise in the human mind, God gives us the desire to reach for the skies. We try, and we are successful or unsuccessful at different times. Success gives joy and failure brings in despondency. But this all-pervading, all-powerful force looks at joy and sorrow with equanimity.
Inside every being is Consciousness and the Supreme Consciousness resides there. Why search for that One outside when He is residing at home? Man is limited, the Supreme, limitless. Therefore it is, that we are not so successful in our attempts. It is often seen that the one who lives in Benaras goes to Haridwar to look for the Supreme and the one who lives in Haridwar goes to Ujjain. The person from Ujjain goes to Mathura thinking it would be easy to get hold of God there.
It is thus that the one who lives in Badrinath makes a pilgrimage to Rameshwaram, the one in Rameshwaram is running to Amarnath and the one in Amarnath is racing to Kedarnath. The person is thus running from inside outward, from the centre to the periphery. But if his direction were to change, from the periphery to the core, his efforts may find success.
To receive God, one has to open one’s inner Self. Swami Ram Tirth had written: “A woman had gone to her parent’s house. The husband was writing a letter to call his wife back. He wrote many emotional lines like: Come back, by now you should be home, etc. It was a stormy day and while the winds were raging, the wife was knocking at the door. She wanted to come in. But the husband thought it was the force of the wind that was causing the door to bang against the door frame.
He was unheeding of the door and the wife was getting tired of banging. The storm was getting more fierce and unable to manage, the wife was just turning to go back when it occurred to her husband that he might as well get up and shut the door firmly. As he opened the door to do so, he found his wife waiting outside.
Swami Ram Tirth told this Sufi story to convey the idea that the one whom you are trying to invite through prayers and rituals, pilgrimages or lavish worship is waiting for you outside the door. The Supreme who is called by many names and is actually nameless, the most powerful One after attaining whom nothing remains to be gained and man becomes content, is waiting. To attain Him, all you have to do is open the door.
