Shri Ashutosh Ji Maharaj
A person's spiritual journey begins when a true spiritual master initiates him into divine knowledge, graces him with the ability to see the light of God within. Neither does the master adorn his disciple with garlands, rosaries, robes, nor does he ask him to alter his outward appearance — grow hair, nails, etc.
yoga is an internal state of mind and any external ritual, dress code, accessories or long hair do not apply to this state. Sant Kabir said, "Many wander the streets as yogis, wearing saffron robes, but verv few attain in ternal yoga." He also said "through external rituals and dresses, man> people claim to be saint, but their minds are full of vices and egotism”.
We cannot be in union with God. It is only by acting on its spiritual significance and burning our material desires that can we truly move towards God. As the White wedding gown of a symbolizes her purity, an orange robe of a yogi symbolizes that he has burned his worldly desires in the fire of divine knowledge.
Likewise, a spiritual master is not known by his outer appearance. As —Sant Kabir said, "We shouldn't be pled by the external appearance of a sage; rather should ask him about di-le knowledge, for with-"'out a test even gold can’t be recognized.”
The knowledge of self realisation, which the master imparts, is his insignia of authenticity and is an admonition for those individuals who ignorantly stress dress codes or accessories as signs of spiritual evolution.
The saffron garb and the associated religious accessories are used liberally by many people; and their victims are innocent people who are moved by flowery words and saintly appearances. The scriptures warn us of such people and declare that they not only mislead themselves but also their disciples.
