The Freedom To Desire Limitlessly

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev

There is only one question that needs to disappear from people’s equation with life: What about me? But most people find it hard to leave this question out of any plan. If you knew how to eliminate your individual identifications from the process, you could raise the pitch of your activity to a completely different dimension. This is the end of karma. You are no longer at the mercy of the endless cycle of cause and consequence. You are liberated.

This is easier said than done. The problem is that people have forgotten how to be inclusively involved with life. Since their involvement is selective, they fall into the trap of entanglement.  They either engage with life selectively, on the basis of their likes and dislikes, or opt for life-sapping philosophies of denial and detachment. In both cases, karma only multiplies.

The only problem with human desire is people’s identification with narrow notions of individuality. The endless oscillation between like and dislike encrusts this sense of separateness. Individuality is not intended to mean loneliness. Nor is it a condition meant to be cured through friendship and love. No distraction can help one find fulfilment in individuality, or freedom from it. It is a privilege turned prison.

Many have grossly misinterpreted Gautama Buddha’s emphasis on ‘desirelessness’. He would have known only too well that without desire there can be no existence. But what he was pointing to was the importance of operating out of a state of inner fulfilment rather than inner hankering. Once this is accomplished, your life becomes an expression of bliss, not a pursuit of it. Your desire does not evaporate; instead, it becomes conscious. Your desire is no longer the unconscious fuel for your personal identity. It is the conscious tool by which you function. You can now desire the well-being of the entire planet.

There is nothing inherently wrong with desire, it’s just that you are stingy with your desires. Yoga is about the freedom to desire limitlessly. Once you say you aspire to ‘liberation’, you have articulated the ultimate ‘greed’! It means you’re not willing to settle for creation; you now want the creator himself.

The question is: How can one make one’s desire limitless? You have a choice: Your desire can be with or without content. Once you add content to it, your desire is always for something familiar. If you know money, food, fame, love or sex, your desire is for more of all these. But if you only strive for what you know, nothing new will ever happen to you. This is a limitation to impose on yourself.

If you generate a huge desire – not for any specific thing, person or purpose – you will see everything that needs to happen in your life will happen without your even asking or aspiring for it. If you make your desire bigger than yourself, your life will happen miraculously. Things that you could never imagine will start coming your way because now your life energy is at its peak. Once this happens, you attract the most beautiful possibilities.

Now you don’t have to work for personal ends any more. Creation itself will do your bidding. You no longer have to worship, or pray for anything. God is no longer your master, but your servant. You have befriended the Divine.
