Life Is Short, So Stop And Smell The Flowers

Poonam Chowdhary

“You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” -Walter Hagen.

The maxim is simple yet how many of us follow this throughout our lives. Each moment is precious and has to be savoured.

You don’t have to be a philosopher or a guru to lead a simple beautiful life. Just unclutter your mind of all junk, negativity and pessimism. I learnt it the hard way when my husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. He taught me what living and breathing meant. We talk of heroes, but during that period I recognised a real hero in my husband. There was no melodrama, no despair, no frustration, no false bravado and everything was normal in his world.

For two long years he went through his share of hospital visits and chemo sessions with absolute normalcy. My home was never under the shroud of darkness or sickness because my husband was more normal than any normal person. He loved life and had fun trips to restaurants after every visit to a doctor. Even before going on life support system, he was asking the ward boy for his share of coconut water. He had immense faith in himself or some unknown and never spoke of death even when he breathed his last breath. He left a valuable lesson to me that life is precious and beautiful, and definitely shouldn’t be wasted.
