The Desire To Excel Keeps Us Going Even In Tough Times

Mansi Handa

In life, we are under constant pressure to do and be better, and even better. In this endeavour, we are fueled by peer comparison and competition. And, if not taken in the right spirit, we can easily become a victim of jealousy and an inferiority complex, besides putting ourselves under undue stress and strain. This doesn’t do us any good.

However, if you think about it, some amount of comparison is desirable and rather healthy, as it does propel us towards further excellence and innovation. If we were to be entirely content with the way we are and not strive for betterment, we would stagnate; there would be no benchmark for excellence. We would stop growing which is so elementary to evolution!

A desire to excel gives us the motivation and inspiration to keep us going, aim higher and to push our boundaries in order to fully realise our capabilities. However, herein, the goals should be real, possible and sustainable.

We must also be conscious of and respect our own limitations, to avoid frustration arising out of non-fulfilment of our goals.

However, the zeal and passion to excel should be enough to ignite a spark within us to keep up the momentum but not so much as to engulf and consume us entirely. Balance is necessary.
