Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism, stressed holy deeds over bookish creeds and true living above external rituals and dogmatic theology. His teachings include: To love God manifested in all, adopt virtuous living and render unconditional service to humanity.
The inner living consists of silence, concentration, meditation, assimilation of wisdom, faith, satsanga and devotional chanting of cosmic vibration Omkar to rise above worldly temptations and tribulations.
Being perfectly non-sectarian he said, “God is neither Hindu nor Muslim. So the path I will follow is God’s way...I belong to no sect and adore one God.”
Nanak noticed that human mind follows two directions, manmukh and gurumukh. Manmukhi or follower of the dictates of own mind falls easy prey to self-pride or egoism associated with lust, anger, craving, jealousy and delusive materialism. While gurumukhi or follower of the teachings of the guru lives life with deep divine anchorage without much wavering by the delusive reality.
About religious disputes he clarified, “He who sees One in all is religious... He who abideth pure amidst the world’s temptations hath known the spirit of religion ...... fill you hearts with love; stop fighting with each other. Truth, which is the basis of all religions is one and can be known only through love.”
