Goggles was one month old when I first saw him. He had a shiny, jet-black coat and dark, lively eyes. He was slightly overweight, compared to other Labradors of his age. His chubbiness was a reason for him to be picked up out of seven siblings in a dog's home by a rich trader. An Octavia drove Goggles home where he received the warmest welcome a puppy could hope for. The trader's family showered all its love on Goggles. He drank a bowlful of warm milk and took his first bite of dairy milk chocolate.
Goggles exchanged laps, was smothered with kisses and lovingly tucked into a soft bed near the hot air blower. I thoughts Goggles’s rags-to-riches story would surely earn him the envy of lesser-placed dogs: the trader's family had an adorable pet and Goggles had been blessed with a home, family and security.
But Goggles’s happiness was short- lived. He developed a prominent limp as he grew up. His disability however didn't cast a shadow on his antics. Tying to rise on his hind legs, he would never miss a chance to say hello to strangers. He would run to his owner at first sight, gleefully wagging his tail and limp happily around him. :
The vet declared that there was a deformity in Goggle's leg that could not be treated. A quick decision to send Goggles away was taken. The trader would not have a limping dog as his pet, lest his neighbours should laugh at him. So, least suspecting, Goggles was dispatched on a servant's bicycle. He was abandoned in a lane a few kilometers away, to fend for himself amidst fierce street dogs.
1 recently heard that the trader bought a new dog. Now nobody in that family talks of Goggles. But there happened to be a ready taker for Goggles: the trader's dhobi. So Goggles lives in the dhobi's quarters and follows his new master to the trader's home when he goes to pick up clothes- Of course, he limps. But the dhobi doesn't mind.
