Panja Saheb

One summer, Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana reached Attock district of Kandahar state. They sat under a tree and started singing God's name. People started gathering around them. A local saint called Wali Kandahari became jealous looking at people's devotion towards Guru Nanak. The day being hot, Bhai Mardana became thirsty. People told him that there was a shortage of water in the area and the only water spring was at Wali's place atop a nearby hill. However, Wali did not allow anyone to take water from his spring. Guru Nanak sent Bhai Mardana to Wali for water, Mardana went up to him three times, but each time, Wali shooed him away rudely. By then, Mardana was dying of thirst. Guru Nanak moved a nearby rock and water sprang up. Mardana quenched his thirst. Wali saw this. He also noticed all the water disappear from his spring. Angry, he threw a big stone at Guru Nanak. Guruji stopped it with his hand, leaving an imprint on the rock. It can be seen even today at Gurdwara Panja Saheb. Wali was humbled. He asked Guru Nanak for forgiveness. Guruji told him to leave his selfish ways and serve everyone with love to please God.
