Connecting With God

We have intelligence, but that’s not sufficient without God's input. We have minds, which are not peaceful without a link with God, explains AJIT KUMAR BISHNOI

‘Are you connected with God? If not, it is like your house is ready with all kind of electrical fittings and appliances but it is not connected to the mains. You cannot move in and don’t. We, human being, are somewhat similar if not connected with God. We have intelligence but that is not sufficient without God’s input. We have minds, which are not peaceful without a link with God. We have senses, which are not controlled because they are influenced by ‘maya’ and not guided by God’s instructions as detailed in bona fide scriptures. One can have all the opulences like lots of money, power, etc. but sans a bond with God there is a big vacuum in our lies, which is generally filled with lust, greed, anger, jealousy, etc.

As in the case of a newly built house where there is an urgent necessity to get connected to the mains, we, human beings, must get linked to God sooner than later. It is not surprising that Lord Krishna speaks of a birth in the family of wise yogis (Geeta 6.42), which is the highest. Why? Because the child will be facilitated by the family members to link with God at the earliest. Because connecting with God in a meaningful way is the prime necessity of a human being.

What happens during a fierce storm when the power lines are damaged and the electric supply is disrupted? It throws the normal life out of gear, especially in extreme weather conditions like severe cold. What do the authorities try to do? They take urgent steps to repair the damage and restore the electric supply.

Why? Because when the electric supply is uninterrupted, we benefit in many ways. We get light in our house. In places, where electricity is used for cooking, they depend upon supply of electricity. Heating or cooling is entirely dependent upon availability of electricity. All the appliances like television, refrigerators, etc. are useless unless there is supply of electricity. And in many houses water needs to be pumped to overhead tanks to get water in our homes. A villager can never appreciate fully the number of benefits electric supply brings till he experiences it.

Similarly, we need to experience the immense benefits a good bond with God brings. Once someone get a taste of it, he or she can never be without it, ie he or she will keep on renewing this bond. Let me cite some of the benefits. Peace of mind — the most rare of all will gradually be achieved. One will feel protected. Don’t we gather so many material objects like money but do we ever feel secure? We don’t because we know their limitations. A good connection with God gives that sense of security.

Are we ever satisfied by accumulating material objects? No, they don’t satisfy. Linking with God does give this feeling. What about knowing what to do, which will be best for us? Do we mostly know? No, we don’t and that is the reason for making so many mistakes, some very serious ones. Connected with God, we are guided perfectly by the omniscient. Our awareness improves by leaps and bounds; we begin to see the big picture. Our intelligence is honed by God’s instructions as given in a scripture like the Geeta. Needless to say, this helps in controlling our minds — a big proposition.

Those, who are predominantly in the mode of goodness, are empowered by God to perform tasks, which a common man is unable to do. We will be supervised by the Almighty. At some point, He begins to manage our lives. What a glorious prospect that is! We begin to belong to the system, which is in place. We come to the position when we have a right to seek help from God. God even performs miracles for those connected with Him.

There will be spiritual progress, useful in the soul’s eternal journey. Good habits will come naturally, as will good sanskars. Personal nature will shine, not dominated by bad emotions. There will be a mood of sacrifice; one will be very useful. And one will not wait for death in old age because he or she will be looking forward to the next life.

Therefore, we must connect with God. We must spend some quality time with Him, especially in mornings, the period of Brahmavela. It is not waste of time but a sheer necessity; it is the most important use of time. Electricity has changed our lives a great deal but what the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God can do is unimaginable till experienced by developing a good bond with Him.
