Security forces put on high alert in J&K Ladakh
Security has been tightened across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh following protests over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Security forces, including the police and paramilitary personnel, have been placed on high alert in both Union Territories to prevent any untoward incidents, particularly in view of demonstrations by members of the Shia Muslim community.
Jammu & Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, along with Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Vidhi Kumar Birdi, is closely monitoring the situation in the Valley.
A senior police official said that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, maintaining law and order remains paramount. He added that although demonstrations are ongoing in certain areas, senior officers are maintaining close coordination and constant review of the ground situation.
Meanwhile, police authorities in Kashmir have urged media organisations and the public to avoid spreading rumours and unverified information.
Shopian Police, in an advisory, asked media outlets and residents to verify all law-and-order-related information from official sources. “All concerned are advised to refrain from rumour mongering, forwarding unverified messages, and creating or amplifying sensational, provocative, or misleading content. Dissemination of fake or false information will attract strict legal action under relevant provisions of law,” the statement said.
Pulwama Police issued a similar appeal to media organisations, journalists, social media users, digital platforms and the general public to act responsibly while reporting or sharing information related to security matters or public gatherings. Baramulla Police also issued an advisory urging the media to avoid sensationalism and depend only on official updates.
National Conference MLA and chief spokesperson of the party, Tanvir Sadiq in a post on social media late on Sunday claimed that restrictions were imposed across Kashmir. “Deeply disappointed at the decision to impose restrictions across Kashmir. Today, thousands of people mourned peacefully. Not a single law & order incident was reported. Imposing restrictions despite complete calm sends a wrong message and feels unwarranted and unfair," he said and urged the Union Home Minister and L-G to reconsider the decision.
Authorities said security arrangements will remain in place and the situation is being continuously assessed to ensure peace and stability across the region.
