PM Modi committed to dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits LG Sinha

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday reiterated that the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley with full dignity and security remains a firm commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing a gathering at the release of the book “Kashmir – Nativity Regained”, authored by Prof Ashok Kaul, the Lieutenant Governor said that Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed profound transformation since 2019.

“The sinister designs of adversaries to derail the dreams and destiny of the people of the Union Territory have been decisively dismantled. Through tireless efforts, the region’s ancient glory is being restored and development has accelerated. Very soon, this soil will be completely freed from the scourge of terrorism,” he said.

The book explores the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, documenting the trauma of the 1989–90 period and the enduring pain of displacement from ancestral homes.

Paying tribute to the resilience of the community, Sinha said, “I salute the indomitable spirit of the Kashmiri Pandit community. Every displaced family carried within them a living ember of Kashmir. In the crucible of struggle and adversity, they preserved their philosophy, spirituality, culture, language and traditions. Even in agony, they discovered new possibilities and scaled remarkable heights of success.”

Highlighting government initiatives, he noted that the Kashmiri Migrant Web Portal was launched in 2021 to facilitate the recovery of houses and lands belonging to displaced Kashmiri Pandit families that had been encroached upon.

“I firmly believe that among the world’s gravest sorrows is the agony of becoming a stranger on one’s own soil. This is what transpired in Jammu and Kashmir. The anguish of the 1989–90 massacre of Kashmiri Pandits by terrorists runs so deep that even time has failed to heal it. The trauma of abandoning homes overnight and being uprooted from ancestral roots continues to haunt displaced families,” he said.

Sinha asserted that while the terror ecosystem in J&K attempted to suppress the truth, the sacrifices and suffering of the victims cannot be forgotten.

“The younger generation must remember that Pakistan-backed terrorists also killed thousands of innocent Kashmiri Muslims. Many cases are so heartrending that words fail to capture them. Since last year, justice has begun reaching affected families, with efforts underway to address their employment and other essential needs,” he added.
