Supreme Court slams Uttarakhand over forest land encroachment

Taking suo motu cognisance of large-scale encroachment and forest land grabbing in Uttarakhand, the Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the state and its authorities for acting as “mute spectators”. “The facts of this case prima facie show as to how thousands of acres of forest land has been systematically grabbed by private individuals…what seems to be shocking to us is that the State of Uttarakhand and its authorities are sitting as silent spectators,” a Special Vacation Bench led by CJI Surya Kant saidIt directed the Chief secretary of Uttarakhand and Principal Conservation Secretary is instructed to form a fact-finding committee and submit a report. Private parties are stopped from creating any third-party rights and no construction shall take place.”
