BSF troops on high alert amid fresh wave of unrest

Amid fresh unrest in Bangladesh, security forces along the eastern front have been put on high alert to counter possible spike in infiltration from across the border, sources say.

While the situation remains peaceful, security agencies are exercising caution along the border to tackle any eventuality. The vigil has been heightened amid reports of a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan reportedly being abducted by cattle smugglers in the early morning hours of December 21.

Though the BSF refused to comment on the incident, reports from Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, where the incident apparently happened, stated that the jawan, who was trying to prevent cattle smuggling along the border, was allegedly abducted by Bangladeshi criminals, but was released by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) later that day. BSF sources maintain that the situation on the border remains peaceful.

“We are maintaining close coordination with the BGB, though everything in control,” said an official. While no reinforcements have been ordered, routine augmentation of manpower is made as part of the vigil, the sources say.

After the August 2024 uprising, which led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster and her subsequent escape to India, Bangladesh has witnessed a fresh wave of anti-India protests over the past few days, leading to the lynching of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das.

Amid arson and violence, triggered by the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, stones were hurled at the Assistant Indian High Commissioner’s residence in Chattogram on December 18.
