The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday carried out extensive searches in three districts of Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the killings of non-locals in the Valley by suspected terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group.
The case pertains to the killing of two civilians from Chamyari in Amritsar (Punjab), who were shot by terrorists on the evening of February 7 last year at Shalla Kadal in the Shaheed Ganj area of Srinagar. Amritpal Singh died on the spot, while the other victim, Rohit Masi, was critically injured and succumbed to his injuries the following day at a Srinagar hospital.
On Tuesday, NIA teams conducted searches at six locations across the districts of Srinagar, Badgam and Sopore in connection with the case, which was registered on June 15 last year on the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Four accused had previously been chargesheeted in the case.
During the searches, the NIA seized several incriminating materials from the residences of sympathisers, cadres and overground workers (OGWs) associated with the proscribed terror outfit, LeT, and its offshoot ‘The Resistance Front’ (TRF). These suspects were involved in harbouring, sheltering and providing logistical support to terrorists.
Investigations so far have revealed that the masterminds of LeT and TRF were in contact with local youth in Kashmir to orchestrate attacks on non-locals as part of a conspiracy to wage war against the Government of India. The criminal plot was reportedly executed physically and through encrypted social media applications.
The NIA is continuing to examine the materials seized during the searches.
