Terrorists hurled two grenades at an Army post in Surankote area along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district early on Wednesday. However, there was no casualty or injury to any soldier at the Army post.
The area was immediately cordoned by security forces and a massive search operation was launched.
Sources informed that out of the two grenades hurled by the terrrists, only one exploded while the other was defused by the bomb disposal squad after it was discovered lying in the area. Panic gripped the area after loud explosion was heard and security forces rushed to the spot. The safety pin of a grenade was found near the perimeter wall of the Army post.
Later a joint operation by the J&K Police and Army was launched in the forest area to find the hiding terrorists.
In October, J&K Police had arrested two terrorists of Jammu Kashmir Ghaznavi Force (JKGF) in Poonch for hurling grenades on religious places and other spots. The arrested terrorists were identified as Abdul Aziz and Munawar Hussain of Hari village.
Wednesday’s attack came after months as the district has witnessed relative calm. The last major attack in the district had taken place in May when one soldier was killed and four were injured when terrorists ambushed an Indian Air Force (IAF) convoy in Sanai Top area of Surankote.
Terrorists had for some months shifted their attention to the districts in Chenab Valley, including Doda and Kishtwar. Multiple attacks have taken place in Kishtwar district in which many soldiers have lost their lives. Two Village Defense Guards and an Army soldier were last month killed in the forest area of Kishtwar.
