Bangladesh’s new Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud arrived here on Tuesday for a four-day visit. This is his first visit abroad after being assigned the Foreign Affairs portfolio in the fourth term of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instead of Information and Broadcasting which was his brief in her previous tenure.
Mahmud will meet his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar for talks on February 7 and deliver a lecture at a New Delhi-based think tank.
Interestingly, even as the minister’s visit was on the cards, NSA Ajit Doval had made a quick dash to Dhaka on February 3 and 4 as the issue of Myanmar was deemed serious. Doval was said to have met Hasina and discussed Myanmar situation.
Before leaving for India, Mahmud underlined India’s role and said Bangladesh’s progress “would never be possible without the political and all-out support of India”.
