A Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was killed and a soldier got injured in an overnight encounter with security forces in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, the police said.

The gunfight erupted last evening when joint teams of forces launched a cordon and a search operation in the Nowhard area of Chrar-i-Sharief following an input of the J&K Police about the presence of Jaish militants in a residential house.

“As the cordon was being laid by joint teams, the hiding terrorist opened indiscriminate firing and lobbed grenades. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing gunfight one militant was killed,” SP, Budgam, Nagpure Amod said.

He said a large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.

A police spokesman identified the slain militant as Asif Shah, a resident of Samboora Pulwama, who was affiliated with the Jaish.

A soldier also received a splinter injury in the initial gunfight.

“One Army personnel of 53 RR received splinter injuries. He was shifted to hospital,” the spokesman added.

A case has been registered at the Chrar-i-Sharief police station.
