A new politics is unfolding in Kashmir without KPs

Dear community members,

Namaskar

Shri Satya Pal Malik, the new Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, has completed about four months in Raj Bhavan in Srinagar and, by his own admission, his sincere outreach efforts have started winning him public confidence Outspoken, accessible and being a career politico, his administrative-political skills have come handy to his style of work, which is surely winning appreciators. Some of his actions have actually demonstrated that he means business at winning over hearts and minds of Kashmiris. The AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) episode, involving Ghaibana namaz-e-janaza of Mannan Wani, an ex-AMU student from Kashmir who had joined militant ranks a few months back and got killed during an encounter with police in Kashmir, was handled differently by Malik He got the sedition charges dropped for two students who allegedly shouted anti-national slogans (separatists trademark azadi slogans) in AMU campus. Taking a cue, he also announced appointment of liaison officers in locations outside the state where a sizeable number of students from J & K study Mistreatment and mistrust of Kashmiri students in several parts of India even if sporadic and occasional and most of the times due to their own inept and anti-national behaviours, is a major issue in Kashmir Separatists are using it as a sinister fault line to fuel local militancy by enticing educated youth with models like Mannan Wani.

The Governor has also come heavily upon the corruption culture prevalent in the state and any tightening of noose around corruption will be welcome. department. People will closely watch if indeed corruption falls drastically. Another masterstroke from the politician governor is announcement of an IPL team for the state, And, if he is successful along with his promise of creating sports and youth-hanging jaunts coffee shops, multiplexes and other recreation facilities within the valley in particular-Malik would become a public hero and in a way help a new kind of politics take roots in the state. far so good and we do pray for success of his efforts which, as per him, have the blessings of the Prime Minister However, so far, Governor Malik has not said a word on Kashmiri Pandits. It can have two connotations-either KPs are not in his priority list or he doesn't want to jump the gun and first want to normalise the situation Whatever his compulsions or preferences are about our cause, we think it is sending a wrong signal to our world and the outside world. That KPs are the worst victims of the bad situation is not hidden. We have suffered as much at the hands of militancy as much with our refugee-like status and living conditions and continued neglect. We are among the primary stakeholders both in peace and development in valley . The BJP has played, in our view, a dirty game by enticing some of our members to join urban local bodies just to make sure that their own game plan succeeds. Tokenism is not for which we will ever settle. We want our rights to be secured and protected.

We have been repeatedly saying that the narrative in Kashmir has changed towards more and more radicalization. Secular space is getting squeezed. schools start with Quran recitals, Islam has become a way of life. The hullabaloo on Urdu Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita, written by the most liberal-secular Kashmiri, late Shri Sarvanand Premi, is yet another testimony to the intolerance that is present at every level in Kashmir society We regret how a former CM could politicise a routine official communication over procurement of these books by the state education department.

Whatever the hon'ble governor does to bring Kashmir back to normalcy, we would not only welcome it but support it. At the same time, the government must also give us our due place in addressing the situation which is going to affect us more than anybody else.
