1991 05 Media Round-Up - Army rape report 'baseless'

NEW DELHI, March 14. The authorities today described as "inspired" the Press reports of mass rape of women by the Army in Kunan village in the border district of Kupwara in North Kashmir.

An official spokesman said the report was baseless and "planted" by anti-national elements to malign the security forces. The reports said 23 village women had been mass raped by Armymen on the night of Feb. 23 during a cordon and search operation.

According to informed sources, the security forces were supposed to launch the opration at night and a typed copy of the complaint of mass rape had reached the State Governor in Srinagar at 5 p.m., five hours before the security forces went in for the raid.
