CHENNAI, AUG. 3. Often, people are wont to say, "these are days of extreme Kali Yuga — why else do the evil flourish, despite blatant violation of virtue?" Many would concur, citing natural calamities such as floods and drought; gruesome events resulting from sheer carelessness are also attributed lo the fast- '
paced era of kali.
Metaphorically speaking, during Kali Yuga, people's heads are down and legs are up, which means pride and ego are holding sway, said Swami Gnanananda Sarasvatht, in her discourse. There is no time to seek knowledge much Jess to think ' ofthe highest level of virtuous conduct and live accordingly. As ' per the scriptures even a devotional way of life is difficult for many people. That is why Lord Krishna declared, "For the protection of the virtuous, for the destruction of evil doers and for establishing righteousness on a firm fooling, I am born from age to age." Devotion is imperative for the well being of all, since as a result of its absence people siart losing faith in ethics and morals, which lend purpose and meaning to life. It would appear as if there can be no end to evil. How can a [rue devotee oi God live in such times?
Total surrender to Cod is the only way. One should not presume thai we should seek what we want at a temporal level; rather this is about ego, about overcoming its loxic effect. Knowledge and devotion are like the wings of a bird — both should be a perfect symmetry for a smooth flight. It is a very just comment that despite trying to adhere to the guidelines, bad times continue lo visit a devotee. That is the cue to pray for strength. Evolution is a series of experiences which help a person get spiritually stronger with a concurrent decline in one's ego.
The path of surrender may appear easy, in reality it is very difficult. For, ego stands in the way, like a huge wall. To scale the same one should develop devotion. Some may be tempted to call upon God lo do their work for them. Personal endeavour is an important ingredient of spiritual quest. One should do one's part, like Draupadi. She tried to help herself in her pathetic situation, and called upon Lord Krishna only as a last resort, and He immediately offered help. Kuchela did not even have to make any request. So detached was his persona that , the Lord provided him with all the divine and earthly riches. Total surrender should come spontaneously from within. Aspirants can get ail the help from the Supreme Being merely by leading a clean, unblemished life.
