Wake Up, India
Jankinath Kaul 'Kamal'
Hindustan! choose the Right Path
Leave this political way of secularism
You are already secular
In the right sense too
When you are 'Hindu'
Not the 'sect' but the 'human"
Thou art the follower of the Vedas
The Vedas speak no distinction
Of caste, creed or class.
These are the unavoidable functions of society
The usual system of caste
Was and is ever meant for
Universal Brotherhood.
Where division of labour
Is a must for healthy growth
Of a people the society;
No mental division
No destruction, no devastation.
Caste of the Vedas
Is the strength of Union.
It is building oneness
Not the so-called oneness
For misappropriation and malice
It is union of spirit
Clearly discussed and described
In the Hindu Sastras
The Great Puranas
The Epics of our country
The Mahabharata and
The great Ramayana.
Yes, you take up the gun,
The gun of sincere knowledge
And kill the enemy in you
The malign desire,
The essence-robbing anger,
The distracting greed,
And the misgiving ignorance.
Rise, O Bharat, with a bold voice
Rise to your ancient culture
The Divine way of
Life and living
Not initiated by
Nehru-Mountbettan friendship
Not introduced by
Campaigners for vote
Not covered by mis-used politics.
Wherein the sacred words of
Satya and Ahinsa
Were dangerously misused
For Political ends
The broader selfish ends;
The consequences of which
We see around and undergo too,
Even after about half-a-century
Of so-called 'gained' independence.
Is this the freedom in India!
Where rich grow richer
And, the poor poorer?
Intellectuals are trampled
Miscreants are conferred degrees.
Were life is looted
And looters pushed to positions;
Where Right education
Has no priority
Where Industry of money reigns.
Is this India!
Where brother eats the flesh
Of his own brother and sister;
Where son puts his own Mother
To ridiculous shame and subjugation.
Are we Indians?
Who do not speak their own language!
Who do not follow their own customs!
Who do not observe their own festivals!
Who fall in the hands of the corrupt,
Who allow themselves to be molested.
India was a great country.
She advocated human culture
She never thought of
Any physicality of caste or colour
She believed in Universal Brotherhood,
She spread the message of peace
But she is stabbed now.
By her own ill-born sons
Corruption and selfishness;
Foreign blood is made
To flow through Her veins
By power of ignorance
By means of unpatriotism
By way of frustration.
O Indians! Rise up
Rise to the occasion
Rise to the great glory
That was yours.
That is clear and current
By its very principles
Unity in Diversity.
Brotherhood besmeared on forehead
Vitality of higher knowledge
Capability of clearness
Quite evident in the
Hereditary actions of the people
Feeding the Daridra Narayana
Caring for the poor
Serving the sages
Spreading the message
Of Peace and Brotherhood.
Throughout the
Length and breadth
of the universe.
Where even an undated guest
Was honoured and served
In the language and sincerity
Of worship and wisdom.
A neighbour cared for his neighbour
A brother helped his brother
A friend cheered up his friend
A disciple obeyed his Preceptor.
Ask yourself O Brother!
Do you follow the principles
The golden rules of happy life.
No, you have become a slave,
Slave to the foreign custom
Slave to the foreign habit
Eating, walking, talking and what not.
Have you not lost
Your richest moorings
Of life and learnings
Have you not deviated
From the path of prosperity
Have you not slipped
To the misery of limitation,
Narrow-mindedness and imitation.
Why have you lost utterly
The sensibility of your own senses.
Why have you made
A mental pauper of your ownself
O Men and Women of India!
Shear your shackles
Of provincialism and communalism,
Away with 'isms'.
Be face to face with Reality
Truth, love, beauty
And show your valour
Your past glory and grandness.
Do not be slave any more
To your short-sighted Selfishness.
Take up in your hands firmly
The banner of Patriotism
The Devotion to your Motherland
And the shield of self-reliance.
Then only your very thought
Of the Independence of India
Will find completion
In the Real sense.
