A sigh of a displaced person

Makhan Lal Kanwall

Translation By: C L Chrungoo

I would cry out atop!

I would burst out my woe!

And lighten my grief and sorrow

A heavy hush has fallen all around,

A lonely warbler is rendered aghast,

For who shall break the ice for him

The octopus is beating its tentacles in the air!

No falling faggot from a fir,

Breaks the silence of wilderness of the forest

I would cry out my heart atop !

The happenings, experiences, losses, the urges,

The pangs, the joys, the beauty, love and begetting

All lie thrust under the carpet of silence

All the belongings enveloped in the smouldering fire.

Not even an ash is a residue !

Done stands undone

Properties are rendered paupers

All lay buried under the pall of hush

I would cry out my heart atop!

I would wail out my grief

If it could lesson the gloom of my heart!

A lump in the throat crushed even a sob of heavy heart

Tears well up and linger by the lashes along,

The breath is hurt by the stuck-up words,

And the tongue is cramped in the hollow of the mouth,

The alphabet is rendered mauled inside:

The lips stand paralyzed as mind is benumbed

I would burst out my heart atop!

And concretise the lurking thought,

But the nature of silence is all pervading

As silent stream of mercury gushes down a cliff.

I would utter aloud, Oh, for the dumb-foundedness

I would burst open my heart

But, oh, where in this wilderness
