Blood Stained Snow
Maharaj Krishan Santoshi
Translation By: R K Bharati
The sky is clear
The whole city is bathed in sunshine
But my mind is so overcast with clouds
That at any time it can snow inside me .
Like that of my childhood
And with the refulgent snow
Shall I wash all the creases of my notions
The fragment of land which for years
Have I been hiding inside me
I lived by the greenery in this city
Where my identity is of the migrant
I have nothing by which to retaliate
The violence save snow
I try to break the ice inside me on roads
with loving palms I keep on knocking
at the doors of people
Trying to break the shameless silence of friends
Holding in my eyes the melancholy of
The JHELUM, the Chinars and the lakes
weep for hours on the blood stained snows
I think my soul is a bird
Whose nest is the whole Valley
Which I fled for fear of the bullet
On vain hopes
Those who relish bloodstains on the snow
Don't know in their aeshetic sense
How many murders have they committed
In the mystic bossom.
The sky is clear
The whole city is bathed in sunshine
And this time the warmth has crept inside me
The ice is melting
The cascades are bursting
All of a sudden
Rivers are roaring
Which were silent till yesterday
But I have forgotten the rippling of rivers
Because I am so frightened
That I feel the rivers too are conspiring against me.
I do not know how long shall
I have to crawl
On the map of the country
But wherever we live
We will have a sloping roof
over our heads
Throwing snow into the courtyard.
