Meet the new baddie in B-wood = Sumeet Kant Kaul

Kashmiri HeroPakhi, a film that deals with the issue of child trafficking, will see Sumeet Kant Kaul make his debut. The actor, a theatre artist from Delhi, is also the grandson of filmmaker Yeshwant Pethkar, who has directed Dev Anand, Pran, Madhubala, Geeta Bali and also worked with Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar.

Sumeet, who plays Bali, the antagonist in the film, shares why he decided to take up a character with grey shades, “I am happy to make my debut in a film which deals with a powerful subject like child trafficking. For an actor, there are no positive or negative roles. They are just roles and one needs to be honest to the craft.” He has also acted in the short film Pihu opposite TV actress Sanaya Irani.

Pakhi, which releases on August 10, has been helmed by National Award-winnning director Sachin Gupta. Talking about Sumeet, Sachin says, “I needed an actor who could simultaneously terrify and entertain the audience, and make them believe that he’s actually doing all the horrible things his character is doing. I needed an intense performer who could play Bali, the child trafficking don, to truly bring out the horror of a 10-year-old’s plight. My search ended with Sumeet. We always remember the bad guys even from the films we’ve watched as children. Let’s just say that Sumeet’s performance is that of a bad guy to be remembered. The issue of child trafficking needs to be highlighted across social media; there is also a bill pending in the parliament to be passed.”
