Congress Divided Over Govt Formation In J&K

Date:- 03 Jul 2018

The Congress seems to be divided over formation of Government in Jammu and Kashmir with a section of its leaders calling for an early election while another section wants to exploit the political situation.

The Congress' core group on Jammu and Kashmir met at the residence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday to discuss the political situation in the State.

The group includes senior Congress leaders Karan Singh, P Chidambaram, Congress general secretary in charge of the State Ambika Soni and J & K chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir. After the meet, Soni said the party wanted early polls in the State. The party will hold a meeting of its legislators in the State in Srinagar this week and discuss the way forward. The Congress is in a wait and watch mode in the State, which is under Governor's Rule after the BJP pulled out of its alliance with the PDP. There are reports of the National Conference and the PDP approaching the Congress for Government formation in the State and a section of leader pondering to form the Government in the interest of the party.

However, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has ruled out that the party will form a Government with the PDP. Azad said there is no question of any alliance with the PDP, which lost power in the State after the BJP withdrew support from the coalition Government.

"There is no question, for now or in the future, of forging an alliance with the PDP," Azad had said while denying having met any PDP leader. Mir on his part claimed that the BJP is making "desperate attempts" to "explore possibilities" to return to power in the state, days after pulling the plug on its alliance government with the PDP.

The speculation are abuzz about a possible meeting congress leadership and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who reached Delhi on the weekend. The PDP has 28 seats and the Congress has 12 in the 87-member state Assembly. A simple majority of 44 seats is required to form the government and some PDP members have been trying to seek the support of the CPI (M) and independent members.
