BJP asks Srinagar mayor, his deputy to focus on work

Date:- 10 Jan 2019

The BJP on Wednesday advised Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu and deputy mayor Sheikh Imran to concentrate on developmental works instead of levelling charges against each other.

“Yes, we supported Junaid Azim Mattu but we request both of them to stop levelling charges against each other and concentrate on developmental works,” BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said while addressing a press conference here.

The BJP spokesman made the comments after accusing the Deputy Mayor of carrying an anti-BJP campaign ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.

“A few people have become active on the social media ahead of the elections and are accusing us of playing communal politics. We want to tell the deputy mayor that he has been given the mandate to look after the day-to-day amenities like water, electricity and roads, but he, at the behest of the Congress, is calling the BJP communal…a party that allowed you (Imran) to contest (the municipal elections) after 17 years. You are only misleading people,” Thakur said.

“The speed of the BJP’s expansion in the state has scared you…you should concentrate on your work but you have made SMC (Srinagar Municipal Corporation) a battlefield where employees are suffering. You are answerable to people and you have to live up to their expectations,” Thakur added

Employees of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation had last week observed a three-day strike amid a war of words between the mayor and deputy mayor.
