Close some depts to downsize Army-Veterans

Date:- 11 Nov 2018

Following the Centre’s move to downsize the Army by about 1.5 lakh troops to meet budgetary constraints, a section of ex-servicemen has suggested abolishing certain establishments and posts that have lost their operational or administrative relevance.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, NGO Saviours of Human Rights of the Armed Forces has suggested that organisations like Directorate General of Resettlement (DGR) and Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) be done away with.

Taking cognisance of the letter, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has forwarded it to the Ministry of Defence for appropriate action, according to a communiqué received by the NGO from the PMO.

The job of the DGR, which is concerned with post-retirement rehabilitation, should be entrusted to the sainik boards of state governments which are better placed and equipped for providing employment in the civilian set-up, the letter states. — TNS
