Our News Folio KS - Koshalya Walli Honoured

Dr. Koshalya Walli, former Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Jammu University, is among the 15 eminent scholars in Sanskrit who were honoured by the President of India, Shri K.R. Narayanan, for their outstanding contribution to the promotion and enrichment of these ancient Indian languages. The honour, carrying an annual cash award of Rupees twenty thousand for life, was presented to Dr. Walli at a solemn function in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on June 7, 1999.

Born on November 27, 1935 at Srinagar, Dr. Walli obtained her M.A (Sanskrit and Hindi), D. Phil, and D.Litt. degrees from Jammu university. She is the only scholar till date to have received D. Litt from this University. She was deputed to Bulgaria to teach Sanskrit under the cultural exchange programme. She has also presented research papers in Philadelphia, Australia and Austria. She has published many authentic titles including 'Concept of Ahimsa in Indian Thought' and 'Theory of Karma in Indian Thought'. She has successfully guided more than a dozen Ph.D. students. Presently, she is the principal research investigator of major research projects of UGC.

Other Kashmiri scholars who have earlier received this Award are Dr B.N. Pandit, eminent Sharva scholar, Dr. Kashi Nath Pandit, noted Persian scholar, and Dr. Ved Kumari, celebrated author of Nilamata Purana Late Pandit JN Kaul 'Kamal'.
