Murmu set to be elected 15th President, counting on Thursday

Date:- 20 Jul 2022

Will be the youngest occupant of India’s highest constitutional office and the first President to be born after Independence

Counting for the 16th presidential election is due on Thursday at Parliament House with the ruling NDA combine candidate Droupadi Murmu all set to win against opposition challenger Yashwant Sinha.

Voting trends on election day, including cross voting in Murmu’s favour, indicated a clear, comfortable edge for the 64-year-old former Jharkhand governor and a weak wicket for 84-year-old Sinha.

The BJP is expecting Murmu will cross the two-thirds mark in the electoral college of 10,86,431 votes.

The total voting turnout in the presidential election on July 18 was 99.12 pc with 4,754 electors out of 4,796 eligible (elected MPs and MLAs) casting their ballot.

Out of 4,025 MLAs eligible to vote in the presidential election 2022, 3,991 voted.

Out of 763 MPs who were eligible, 771 voted and eight were absent.

The counting will commence in Parliament House here at 11 AM and results will be declared soon as the counting is over, Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, returning officer for the election, said today. Murmu will take oath on July 25 with the incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind’s term ending on July 24.

Thirty-one polled ballot boxes will be opened for counting tomorrow—one which was located at Parliament House Room 63 on the day of the election and 30 boxes that were located at the state headquarters.

Although the 2022 presidential election was the 16th, it will send India’s 15th president to the highest constitutional office. Dr Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President had served two terms.

Murmu once elected will not only be the first tribal president of India, and the first leader from the east to hold the highest office but also the first president to be born after Independence.

Murmu was born on June 20, 1958. All previous presidents were born before Independence.

Murmu will also be the youngest in India’s history to hold the highest office once elected.
