Army holds drill in eastern Ladakh

Date:- 04 Sep 2021

At over 14,000 feet, the event includes live fire exercise

The Army has conducted an exercise with tanks close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh at an altitude of more than 14,000 feet. The exercise included an integrated manoeuvre and live fire exercise by the ‘snow leopard brigade’ which has tanks as part of its arsenal.

The flat plateau of Ladakh has ample scope for tanks battles. During the 1962 India-China conflict, India had airlifted the AMX tanks to the station at Chushul. The brigade is headquartered close to Nyoma that is on the right bank of the Indus and is just south west of the southern bank of Pangong Tso where India and China had ramped up numbers in late August last year.

This comes in the backdrop of the Army’s focus on adding tanks and infantry combat vehicles in high altitude terrain following the deployment of tanks by India and China during the last year stand-off in Eastern Ladakh.

Lt Gen PGK Menon, the commander of the Leh-based 14 Corps, reviewed the operational preparedness of the Brigade.
