BSF lodges protest with Bangladesh force over attack on patrol party

Date:- 31 Aug 2021

2 Bangladeshi smugglers shot in ‘self-defence’

The Border Security Force (BSF) says it has lodged a “strong protest” with its Bangladesh counterpart BGB after smugglers attacked an Indian patrol team, which fired in self-defence leading to the death of two miscreants along the eastern border.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday near the Changrabandha border post in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal.

“The BSF troops were surrounded by 18-20 Bangladeshi smugglers while patrolling the border. The troops asked them to leave the area but they didn’t listen and attacked them, resulting in grievous injuries to some in the BSF patrol party,” a senior officer said. “Sensing imminent threat to life, the troops fired in self-defence,” he said.

The BSF guards 932 km of the total 4,096-km stretch of the India-Bangladesh international border on the eastern flank. “The bodies of two Bangladeshi smugglers were spotted about 100 m inside the Indian territory. The BGB was informed and a strong protest was lodged over the incident,” he added. — TNS
