Narco-terror threat looms in J&K, warns Intel

Date:- 28 Aug 2021

Post release from Afghan jails, Jaish men pose threat

Security and intelligence agencies in their reports to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have cautioned that there has been increased threat of narco-terrorism in J&K, as an immediate impact of Taliban capturing the power in Afghanistan.

Sources said the agencies, in their multiple reports to the MHA, have said the Pakistan-based terror outfits were feeling emboldened after the recent development in Afghanistan and were putting in place an elaborate plan with increased man-power to push banned nacro-substances across the border in J&K from their side.

The reports suggest that with Taliban capturing power in Afghanistan the preparedness of “our security and enforcement set-up” has to be taken to the next level, as Pakistan-based terror outfits along with the new ruling class in their western neighbour “will heat up Golden Crescent” for supply of drugs, the sources said.

Golden Crescent is the opium-producing area that cuts across Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan and is one of the most important opium-producing centres of the world.

Meanwhile, in another report, the intelligence agencies have informed the government that about 100 members of banned terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), who were released from prisons in Afghanistan, have joined back the outfit. They are now planning to launch fresh attacks in India, particularly in J&K, sources, quoting the reports, said.

“The agencies have tracked a few JeM-linked social media posts in which the outfit’s chief, Masood Azhar, is exhorting the cadres to prepare for attacks,” said an officer.
