CRPF officer among 2 martyred in militant attack, 2 injured

Few OGWs rounded up by police. Two paramilitary CRPF personnel including an officer were martyred while two others injured, one of them critically, in a hit and run militant attack at Lawaypora area on Srinagar outskirts today.

Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that police got a clue about the attack and rounded up few OGWs. He said that the militants who carried out the attack had come from Bandipora.

Speaking to reporters at the site of incident, Deputy Inspector General of CRPF Srinagar sector, Kishore Panday said that at least four heavily armed militants fired on the Mobile Bunker Vehicle (MBV) of CRPF that was part of the Road Opening Party (RoP) at Lawaypora. He said that two CRPF men were martyred in the attack, third one is critical and fourth one is stable.

He said that joint teams of CRPF and police have sealed the area and searches are on to nab the attackers. The martyred CRPF men have been identified as Sub Inspector GD Manga Deb Barma and Constable Driver Ashok Kumar. The injured have been identified as Constable Jagan Nath Roy and Constable Nazim Ali. The injured constable Jagan Nath Roy has sustained head injuries and is critical. All of them belonged to 73 Battalion of E-Coy.

The DIG CRPF said “security forces are after them and will catch them soon.” “We have laid nakas and massive searches are being conducted in the area to track down the attackers,” he said.

Police said that the CRPF men came under attack at about 5.45 pm. “Senior police and security forces officers immediately reached the spot to evacuate injured and to ascertain the facts and circumstances leading to the attack,” police said.

IGP Vijay Kumar and all ranks of Kashmir Zone Police pay rich tributes to martyrs. “We stand by their families at this critical juncture”, Police said.

“Investigation is vigorously going on and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this crime besides identifying the militants involved in the crime. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on to nab the militants,” the police said.

Meanwhile, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh today condemned the militant attack on CRPF as a cowardly act.

In a statement, he said that militants were feeling frustrated and disappointed in view of strong vigil of the security agencies in J&K.

Chugh warned disruptive forces against such ghastly acts and said the process of peace and development in the region cannot be disrupted by militants.

He said the ISI-sponsored militancy would meet its end soon in the face of tight law and order situation being maintained by security forces in the region. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has also condemned the attack in Kashmir. “Condemn the terror attack on CRPF personnel in Lawaypora, J&K. Salute the martyrdom of personnel, who made the supreme sacrifice. Heartfelt condolences to bereaved family members,” Gehlot tweeted.
