A soldier of the army counter-insurgency unit and three militants were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, officials said.

In less than 12 hours, seven militants have been killed in two gunfights in south Kashmir.

The latest gunfight broke at Zadoora in Pulwama when joint teams of police, Army and CRPF cordoned off the area following an input about the militants’ presence.

“As the cordon was being laid, the hiding militants opened fire on the forces critically wounding a soldier of Rashtriya Rifles. The soldier was shifted to a medical facility and later succumbed to his injuries. In the gunfight that followed three militants were killed,” an official said.

The identities of the slain could not be established immediately.

Srinagar-based defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia confirmed the killing of a soldier and three militants.

“One AK rifle and two pistols were seized from the encounter site,” he said.

On Friday, four militants of Al Badr, including a commander, were killed in a gunfight at Kiloora in Shopian district.

They were identified as policemen-turned-militant Shakoor Parray, who was Al Badr district commander; Suhail Bhat, Zubair Nengroo and Shakir-ul-Jabbar.
