Baramulla encounter in J-K enters day 2 as fresh firing resumes

The operation at Kreeri area of Baramulla district entered its second day on Tuesday as a fresh exchange of fire took place between militants and security forces on Tuesday morning.

The operation began on Monday after militants attacked a joint naka party of police and CRPF personnel at Kreeri, Baramulla, at around 9.15 am leaving Special Police Officer Muzaffar Ali of Pattan Baramulla and two CRPF men identified as Khurshid Khan and Sharma Lavkush Sudarshan, both residents of Bihar, dead. In the initial retaliatory firing, one militant got injured.

Police said the militants were engaged till the area was completely cordoned off with the help of reinforcement. In the subsequent operation by the joint forces, two militants - Lashkar-e-Toiba top commander Sajad Mir alias Hyder and Anayatullah Mir of Andergam Pattan - were killed. Two Army men were also critically wounded during the gunfight.

The joint forces maintained a tight cordon during the night as they suspect a Pakistani militant was hiding in the area.

 “There was a fresh exchange of fire this morning and the operation is still on,” a senior police officer said.
