Three Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces in the Tral area in Pulwama district on Friday morning.

The gunfight had erupted late on Thursday evening and ended on Friday afternoon, following the killing of the three militants.

Unofficial sources identified the slain militants as Mohammad Qasim Shah, Basit Ahmad Parray and Haris Manzoor Bhat.

A seven-year-old boy and a CRPF personnel were killed in a militant attack in the Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district today.

The boy was identified as Nuhan Ahmad Bhat, son of Muhammad Yaseen, a resident of Mouchawa village in the Yaripora area of the neighbouring Kulgam district.

The slain CRPF man was identified as Shamal Kumar Reddy, of the 90 Bn of the paramilitary force.

The attack took place at around noon near Bijbehara’s Mughal Garden along the old National Highway.

A senior police official from Bijbehara said the militants came on a motor cycle and opened indiscriminate firing at the CRPF men posted along the road.

“One of the CRPF men and the boy, who was travelling with his father in car, were hit by bullets,” the official said, adding that the CRPF man got several bullet wounds, while the child had only one bullet on his chest.

He said both were immediately evacuated to the nearby Sub-District Hospital, where both were declared brought dead by doctors.

Following the attack, panic gripped the main market in Bijbehara as shopkeepers downed their shutters and ran for their safety.

“Searches were carried out to try and nab the attackers, but they had fled by then,” the official said.
