An Army jawan was killed in cross-border shelling in the Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district on Thursday.
Havildar Mathiazhagan P was a resident of Salem district in Tamil Nadu. He is survived by his wife.
“The Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation along the Line of Control in the Sunderbani sector. In the ensuing retaliation, Havildar Mathiazhagan was critically injured and succumbed to his injuries during treatment,” said Lt Col Devender Anand, defence PRO.
The martyr was a brave, highly motivated and a sincere soldier and the nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion, he said.
Sources said the Pakistan army was for the last few months desperately trying to push in trained militants from Rajouri and Poonch districts under the cover of heavy artillery, mortar shelling and firing on Indian Army’s forward locations and civilian areas.
