Date:- 31 May 2020

The National Conference on Friday decided to boycott the delimitation exercise after three of its senior members, who are the parliamentarians from Kashmir, were earlier nominated as associated members of the delimitation commission.

‘Party against commission’  This delimitation commission is a product of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, which the NC is challenging in and outside the SC. Participating in this delimitation commission will be tantamount to accepting the events of August 5, 2019, which the NC is unwilling to do. — National Conference

National Conference (NC) spokesman Ruhullah Mehdi said the party would not participate in the delimitation exercise.

“This delimitation commission is a product of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, which the NC is challenging in and outside the Hon’ble SC. Participating in this delimitation commission will be tantamount to accepting the events of August 5, 2019, which the NC is unwilling to do,” the party said in a statement.

The decision to boycott the delimitation exercise was taken after high-level deliberation of the party high command. Farooq Abdullah, who is the parliamentarian from Srinagar, Hasnain Masoodi and Mohammad Akbar Lone — the parliamentarians from south and north Kashmir, respectively, were earlier nominated by the Lok Sabha Speaker as the associate members of the delimitation commission. BJP parliamentarians from the Jammu region — Jitendra Singh and Jugal Kishore Sharma — were also nominated to the panel.
