A youth was killed and another injured after the Army allegedly opened fire at a stone-pelting mob in Trehgam area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday.

Khalid Gafar, 20, a shopkeeper, sustained injuries and succumbed to his injuries. A police officer confirmed the death but said only further probe will reveal the circumstances under which Gafar was killed.

Soon after the news of the youth’s death spread, protests erupted in Trehgam and adjoining areas. The district administration ordered the closure of all educational institutions on Thursday.
