1993 Mumbai Blast Accused Held

Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) nabbed one of the accused in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and close aide of Dawood Ibrahim Ahmed Aalam Sheikh alias Ahmed Lambu from Navasari —Valsad coastal belt of South Gujarat on Thursday late night.

This is a major operational success on the part of ATS team of Gujarat said a senior official adding that the police had been on lookout for Lambu since past 22 years. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had announced an award of Rs 5 lakh since 1997. A Red Corner Notice was also issued against him by Interpol.

Lambu was one of the key accused and involved in planning, landing of ammunition and execution of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. In the serial blasts more than 250 persons died and around a thousand were injured. He was said to be in meeting held at bungalow of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim for planning of the blasts, landing of RDX at Raigadh and also carrying out serial blasts in Mumbai.

Due to serial blasts life in the commercial capital of India had paralysed for at least a week and the incident affected in business and industries also. Lambu is said to have fled the country to Dubai, even as his family continued to live in Mumbai. For some time he was allegedly stayed in neighbouring Pakistan also. He could flee from the hands of cops with the help of Mohammed Dosa, another key accused in the Mumbai serial blasts. According to officials Dosa helped Lambu to procure a fake passport.

He had allegedly changed his identity for multiple times to evade arrest. At the time of his arrest from South Gujarat his identity was Khalid. After primary interrogation, ATS team of Gujarat will initiate procedure to hand him over to Mumbai Police.

On March 12, 1993 a series of 12 bomb explosions took place in Mumbai. The attack said to be carried out in revenge for earlier riots. The attacks were coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim through his accomplices Tiger Memon and Yakub Memon.

After almost two decades after the incident, the Supreme Court of India in its judgement on March 21, 2013 upheld the death sentence against the prime accused Yakub Memon and communicated death sentence against 10 others to life imprisonment. Though two main suspects in the case Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon have not yet arrested, the Maharashtra government executed Yakub on July 30, 2015.
