Man found dead with slit throat, grenade hurled at army camp

SRINAGAR: A 35-year-old man was killed in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district in an alleged terror attack, while militants lobbed a grenade on an army camp and tried to snatch a rifle from a policeman in two separate incidents in the restive state’s Kulgam district on Friday.

These incidents come barely hours after at least two policemen and a civilian were injured when a grenade was hurled by suspected militants at Jammu bus stand, police said.

The body of the man, identified as Mohd Yaqoob Wagay, was found with his throat slit at Hajin, some 5km from his residence in Gund Preng village.

Police blamed Lashkar-etaiba militants led by one Saleema Parray, for the killing of the man, who is a butcher by profession.

Relatives of Wagay said around 12am, three to four masked men forcibly entered his house, overpowered him and bludgeoned him to death inside the room.

“At the time of the incident, his wife and his eight-year-old son were present inside the house,’’ said one of his relatives.

Superintendent of police Bandipora, Zulfkar Azad said the killing was carried out by LET militants.

In another incident in the day, unidentified militants hurled a grenade targeting a Rashtriya Rifles camp at Nehama village in South Kashmir. The grenade exploded close to the army camp, killing a sniffer dog.

In the same district at Wanpoh village militants tried to snatch a rifle from a policeman guarding a power station. The alert sentry, however, fired some rounds in air forcing militants to flee.

In the Thursday night’s grenade attack on the Jammu bus stand, constable Israr Shah, special police officer Arjun Kumar and a civilian Jagdev Raj of Billawar sustained injuries.

An officer of the Jammu Bus Stand police station said unidentified terrorists hurled a grenade from the nearby flyover around 11.15 pm and escaped in a vehicle.

An FIR has been lodged over the incident, he added.
