10 hurt in Anantnag grenade attack - Cops

Date:- 24 May 2018

SRINAGAR: Ten civilians, including a minor, were wounded in a grenade attack by suspected militants in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday.

Police officials said militants hurled the hand grenade in Goriwan Chowk of Bijbehara, in which 10 civilians were injured, including three women and a 12-year-old boy Fazal Ahmad who is critical.

A police spokesman said the grenade exploded on the road amid the civilian population. He did not specify the target of the attack. “Six persons who suffered minor injuries are being treated at a nearby hospital, while the seriously injured have been taken to Srinagar for advanced treatment,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, five Maharashtra legislators escaped the attack. The legislators — Vikram Kale and Dipak Chavan (both Nationalist Congress Party), Tukaram Kate and Kishore Patil (Shiv Sena) and Sudhir Parwe (BJP) — were on a study tour to understand the functioning of the Panchayat Raj systems in J&K.

The attack comes a week after the Centre asked security forces in J&K to not launch operations during Ramzan in an effort to help Muslims observe the holy month peacefully. On Tuesday, state’s director general of police SP Vaid termed the suspension of military operations in the Valley as successful.
