Terrorists Flee With 3 Service Rifles In J&K

Date:- 18 May 2018

Khursheed Wani | Srinagar

A day after the Centre declared a thaw in anti-terrorist operations in the holy month of Ramjan, suspected ultras looted three service rifles from a police post in Dalgate area of capital Srinagar on Thursday evening sending the police force into a tizzy.

Police said the rifles have gone missing and inquiry has been launched to ascertain facts.

A local news agency quoted Inspector general of Police (Kashmir range) Soyam Prakash Pani as saying that three rifles have gone missing from police post outside a hotel at Buchwara, Dalgate. “We are investigating as to how these weapons went missing,” he said.

The police post is inside a private hotel in the area mostly thronged by tourists. Sources said at least two cops posted at the post were held for questioning.

Locals said that terrorists came on bikes shouting slogans in favour of Hizbul Mujahideen and looted the rifles. The looted weapons include one SLR and two INSAS rifles.

Sources said ultras might have decamped with the rifles when the police personnel had gone to offer evening prayers shortly after breaking the first fast of the holy month of Ramzan.

The incident is significant in the backdrop of unilateral ceasefire announced by the central government during the holy month of Ramzan. Militants have not given positive response to the ceasefire offer.

A day before militants snatched service rifle of a policeman at Kashmir University. Last month four rifles were looted from a police post guarding a temple in Goripora locality of uptown Srinagar.

Officials say that militants in Kashmir, especially the fresh recruits, face shortage of weapons. The situation has forced them to snatch rifles from policemen and paramilitaries deployed at various locations.
