Terrorist Killed In Tral Jem ‘Operational Commander’, Masood’s Aide: Police

Date:- 27 Apr 2018

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday claimed that one of the four terrorists killed in Tral forests of south Kashmir two days ago was ‘operational commander’ of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit and close aide of its founder Masood Azhar.

“Operational commander of JeM Mufti Yasir was among those killed in joint operation in upper reaches of Tral,” Shesh Paul Vaid, Director General of Police announced on twitter. Vaid also tweeted a picture with gun-wielding Yasir walking alongside Masood Azhar somewhere in Pakistan. Yasir has been encircled in the undated picture in which both Jaish leaders are seen with security personnel.

Yasir was among four militants killed in a fierce gun-battle in Laam-Gotingoo forests of south Kashmir’s Tral sub-district on April 24. A Rashtriya Rifles soldier and a counterinsurgency policeman were killed in the daylong gun-battle. The army called paratroopers to fight the militants who had escaped after inflicting casualties on the security forces in the first contact. Two of the slain militants were local cadres.

The area has observed shutdown for the past two days even as thousands of people took part in the funeral prayers of the slain local militants. The foreigners are given a silent burial in a remote graveyard in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Meanwhile, suspected militants on Wednesday night attacked a police post in Goripora area near sanat Nagar in uptown Srinagar and decamped with four rifles. The police picket was in the premises of Gori Shankar temple in the area.

Official sources said that a group of militants believed to be seven in number barged inside the police post manned by four personnel and decamped with four rifles and ammunition. The policemen belonged to the 13th battalion of J&K Armed Police. A cordon and search operation was launched in the area after the incident but no arrests were made.

Sources said that ultras overpowered the policemen and before confining them to a room decamoed with one INSAS, one carbine and two self-loading rifles.

The rifles were snatched a few hours after a police check-post intercepted three youngsters riding a motor bike in Pampore area of south Kashmir. On frisking a pistol was recovered from their possession and further quizzing revealed that they were looking for a soft target to snatch a rifle from a security personnel.

In another incident, a civilian was killed after militants opened fire on security forces in Anantnag town of south Kashmir.

Reports said that militants targeted Road Opening Party of CRPF on Pahalgam-Anantnag road near Lazibal. The gunshots created panic in the busy town. Witnesses said that CRPF retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for some time. A civilian identified as Shakeeb Shabir from Shopian district suffered injuries who was shifted to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He was an undergraduate student.

Panic also gripped the Islamic University of Science and technology (IUST) campus in Awantipora after security forces resorted to aerial firing after some students allegedly pelted stones on troopers. Vice chancellor of the University Prof Mushtaq Siddiqui described the firing as ‘unprovoked’.

Reports said that students were protesting inside the campus when they observed the movement of army from the hilly side of the campus repairing some cables. Some students pelted stones on them, who retaliated with aerial firing.

“There was no provocation from the students as normal class work was on in the Varsity, and protests started only after firing incident led to tear gas shelling in the campus,”Siddiqui said in a statement.

A police official meanwhile issued a statement stating that Army personnel were laying /repairing the cable near Islamic University Road. They came under unprovoked heavy stone pelting from the miscreants and also from inside the campus of IUST. The Army personnel fired in air to chase the miscreants away.
